In celebration of National Hearth Health Month, Cordell Memorial Hospital will be offering heart scans to patients for just $15. The scans, said hospital administrator Kenny Downs, are completely non-invasive and involve no needles or contrast dyes, and don’t require any fasting or dietary restrictions before or after.

The heart scan is very much like a traditional CT scan, Downs said. The patient lies down on the table, which then slides into the scanner. A detailed scan of the heart is performed, which is designed to detect plaque build-up in the arteries around the heart. The radiation involved, he said, is about the same as a chest X-Ray.

“We do hundreds of these tests every year,” Downs said. “But during Heart Health Month we discount the test to $15 as a service to our patients and our community.”

Downs said he could recall several instances in which patients who demonstrated no noticeable symptoms were alerted to potential heart trouble because of this scan.

“This service has provided life-saving early detection of potential heart issues to several members of the Cordell community,” he said.

Cordell Memorial Hospital will be offering the $15 heart scans throughout the month of February, with preliminary results available to patients on the same day.
