Last Saturday, Dec. 14, the Cordell Fire Deparment burned down a dilapidated house on the corner of Grant and Third. The burn served two purposes: to help clean up a dangerous structure and to provide a live-fire training exercise for Cordell’s firefighters.
Cordell Fire Chief Seth Slaughterback said the exercise, while valuable, is probably the last one the fire department will perform inside city limits. He said the year-long permitting process was very time consuming and it’s becoming too dangerous to burn houses inside the city because they’re too close together, which poses too great a risk to surrounding houses.
