A Cordell native who has established a winning tradition as a Ft. Cobb basketball coach, and is an Oklahoma City hospital battling COVID-19, is showing some progress and improving, his wife said.

Becky Hines, whose husband Scott has been hospitalized since July 17 in three different facilities, said this past weekend, “they are trying to take him off the pain medication and sedation. He still can’t talk because of the trac, but he can nod his head and communicate with us.”

She noted that, “he’s still on some medication. They are working at getting him off the ECMO machine. He’s more awake. He’s made some progress, but he is still in critical condition.”

Becky said they have moved him to a different kind of bed the last few days. “It’s a bed that they strap him in and stand him up, though not completely,” she explained. “They’ve started physical therapy.

“They are really pleased with what he can do,” she said.

Becky said she’s encouraged. “He’s doing much better, making improvement. I know he still has a long way to go. But he has come a long way in the past week,” she believes.

“We are much better than we were last week,” she thinks, referring to her husband’s progress.

Becky said they will keep doing physical therapy and they will do occupational therapy as well.

Becky and Scott’s two sons, Cameron, 22, and Kellen, 20, haven’t seen their dad since July 17 when he entered Grady Memorial Hospital in Chickasha. Cameron is a senior at USAO and Kellen’s a sophomore there. Both play basketball, Becky said, and Cameron also plays baseball.

She pointed out they were going to try and Facetime their dad this past weekend. Becky said he’s heard their voices on phone calls she’s made to her two sons but that’s all.

She emphasized, “We appreciate the support from everybody. Everyone has been so helpful with prayers, and at home, and they have provided support in every way.”

“It’s an ongoing response from family, friends, community, and even more far reaching than that,” Becky added.

A fundraiser is planned to help out Scott, Becky and their family with expenses being incurred.

A couple who are family friends are planning a golf fundraiser for this Saturday, Sept. 12.

Mary Jane Repp and her husband Eddie are spearheading the fundraiser. She said it will be at the Ft. Cobb State Park Golf Course.

“I have one team opening,” she said this past weekend. “There was a cancellation.”

“There’s a morning flight and afternoon flight and there are two teams teeing off each hole in the morning and on most of the holes in the afternoon,” she said.

The morning flight tees off starting at 9 a.m. and the afternoon flight tees off at 3 p.m. “There are 38 teams teeing off in the morning and 24 in the afternoon,” Mary Jane said. It’s a four-man scramble format and the entry fee is $300 per team to enter, she said.

“We’re plumb full except for that one.” However, Mary Jane stated if anyone is interested in getting in the tournament they can give her a call at 405-668-0182 in case there are some other last minute cancellations.

Mary Jane pointed out, “There has been super support in all aspects of helping with the tournament. There have been a lot of businesses who are also sponsoring the tournament and volunteers who have helped. Some are bringing food and helping to serve it,” she explained.

She noted, “We are going to serve food to the players.”

The local support has been tremendous..

“We have a couple of corn hole boards that were donated and we will have a silent auction for those. And someone else donated four certificates for four players to go and play at Winter Creek at Blanchard, a really nice golf course, and we will have a silent auction for those,” she stated.

She explained, “We are doing a silent auction due to COVID-19.” A magnetic speaker is a giveaway for mulligans that we are selling,” she said.

“I want to thank everyone who has helped us. The Hines family has been a part of this community for a long, long time. We are looking forward to a good tournament,” she said.
