A 32-year-old Canute woman is facing the possibility of more than 20 years in prison after her July arrest in Cordell.

Jamaia Dawn Cress was charged July 21, 2020, with a single felony count of lewd or indecent acts to child under 16, and one misdemeanor count each of furnishing alcohol to a person under 21 and obstructing an officer.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in the case, Cordell police officer Trevor Stewart and assistant chief Scott Hill were dispatched to a residence on Dena Drive by a woman who reported being threatened by another woman. The caller told dispatch that the woman who threatened her may be in a vehicle outside the residence.

Upon arrival, Stewart made contact with the woman in the SUV and the owner of the residence. The woman reportedly told Stewart she had been trying to reach her 13-yearold daughter for quite some time and when she finally made contact, the daughter’s speech indicated she might be drunk.

The woman told Stewart she knocked on the door, but when no one answered she let herself in, as she had seen a woman at the window and she had brought the owner of the residence with her. She told Stewart she found her daughter in a bedroom, lying naked on the bed, very drunk.

At that point, Stewart and Hill arrived on the scene. Stewart accompanied the homeowner into the residence to speak to the reporting party, Jamaia Cress. Stewart reported Cress had a “profound odor” of alcohol on her person.

When Stewart asked Cress if she had given the two minors in the home alcohol, she reportedly answered that it wasn’t her house and she couldn’t control what the kids did.

When Stewart began to press for answers, Cress became agitated and demanded to know why she was being questioned when it was her who called the police. After she repeatedly refused to answer Stewart’s questions, he attempted to detain Cress, but she resisted. Ultimately, Hill and Stewart were able to place Cress in restraints.

The 13-year-old victim, when questioned, reportedly told Stewart Cress had “pushed up on her” and kissed her. The other juvenile girl present said she did not witness the kissing, but did see Cress getting into the shower, naked, with the victim.

The victim was transported to Alliance Health in Midwest City where she was examined by a qualified sexual assault nurse examiner.

Stewart then contacted the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and made a referral.

If convicted of the sexual assault, Cress could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. Each of the misdemeanor charges carries a penalty of up to one year imprisonment.
