The Burns Flat-Dill City History Day students, consisting of Jordan Mason, Lorsa Hughes, Kayela Staples, Donovan Webb and Riley Johnson, competed at National History Day in College Park, Maryland on June 8-13, 2019. The senior group researched and wrote a performance skit about child labor in the early 1900’s in the United States entitle “Title Fingers.” The students placed first at Regional competition at SWOSU in Weatherford, Oklahoma and placed first at State competition in May. The group also received the Best Use of Labor Award at the state competition.

The students began researching their project in September with visits to the Clinton Public Library and the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City. After reading and researching many books and websites, the students wrote their script and began memorizing their parts. Many hours were spent polishing the performance and working on the dramatic flair needed for the performance. Mrs. Marva Webb donated many hours helping the students to perfect their roles.

At Nationals, the students were awarded the Outstanding Senior Group entry for Oklahoma. The group has been invited to the Kingfisher Historical Society on August 6 to perform.

A special thank you to all the business, individuals, teachers and parents who helped to make this trip possible. Attending competition with the students were their sponsor, Mrs. Patsy Lyles, and parents, Kandii Hughes, Larissa Mason and Terri Ledbetter.
