Cordell’s vacant Ward 3 council seat has been filled. The council met in special session Friday, Feb. 14, and voted to appoint Lowell “Buddy” Holman to the body.

Holman is a 2003 graduate of Cordell High School, with a degree in history from SWOSU. He currently teaches in Cordell High School’s new blended learning center. He is scheduled to be sworn in during the Feb. 18 regular meeting of the city council.

Holman was approved by the unanimous vote of the four council members present during the meeting. Council members Vona Hicks, Cheryl Wedel, James Newman, and Vicky Dunlap were present. Council members Steve McLaughlin, Zetta Penner, and Earlene Smith were absent.

The seat was vacated Dec. 19, 2019, when then-councilwoman Kelly Maddox-Tilley resigned over concerns about her operating a marijuana dispensary within city limits despite Oklahoma’s regulations precluding city officials and employees from doing so.

Holman’s appointment will only last until the next general municipal election, which is scheduled for April 2021. The voters of Cordell will then decide who will hold the seat for the remaining two years of the term.
