Western Technology Center’s Biomedical Academy wants to bring a smile to faces everywhere. As they continue their Smile Campaign this year, the group made a stop at the Cordell Christian Home on Feb. 13. Juniors and seniors from the Biomedical Academy spent their day with the residents at the Christian Home sharing stories, activities, and love.
Students asked residents if they had any advice for young adults about relationships. With Valentine’s Day close, the residents were happy to help. Students received responses like the standard “never go to bed mad,” “be slow to anger and quick to forgive,” and “be faithful and committed.” More answers included “don’t give up your money,” “boys are dumb,” and even flat out “life is better single.” It was all in good fun, and it was nice for the students to gain insight and wisdom with comedy as the background.
WTC students also helped with bingo, painting residents’ nails and handing out Valentines to the residents. Before lunch everyone joined in on a sing along in the main room. Everyone sang songs from Johnny Cash to gospel hymns. The students finished the day with cookies and thank yous to all the residents.
WTC Biomedical Academy has a goal to bring 1500 smiles to 1500 faces while serving 1500 hours of community service. They have been active in spreading cheer at nursing homes, Special Olympic events, organizing Texting and Driving Assemblies, STEM camps and special middle school events. They believe an important step in healing is smiling, don’t be surprised if they bring a smile to your face.
