Cordell Schools announced that Mike Higgins has been chosen as Elementary Principal for the 2021-2022 school year. Higgins will replace Alan Hull, who will be retiring after serving for 20 years in that position.
“My family and I are excited about getting to Cordell and being a part of the Blue Devil family,” Higgins said.

Heather Flores has been named the new General Manager and Editor of the Cordell Beacon. She has lived in Cordell for 4 years. Before working at the Beacon, she worked at IHeart Radio in San Antonio and Farmers COOP Exchange in Cordell. Flores takes over from Thomas R. Martinez, who resigned to lead the editorial team at the new nonprofit, nonpartisan Fort Worth Report.

Alan Newman has been chosen as the Cordell Beacon and Great Plains Bank Person of the Year. Newman was born and raised in Cordell. He divides his time between his main job as a truck driver and running the Judah Food Bank and Thee Thrift Store. Newman’s tireless efforts to keep food on local families’ tables during the pandemic and other selfless acts of giving make him our Person of the Year.

Washita County resident Denver Horn was recently chosen as Veteran of the Week and recognized by the Oklahoma legislature.
On April 12, 2021, Horn had a ceremony held for him in his honor in the Oklahoma House of Representatives that was hosted by Rep. Todd Russ.In honor of being named Veteran of the Week, Horn was presented with a certificate as well as an American flag that had been flown at the state Capitol in his honor.

With a long history working in the Cordell abstract office, Darla Ringo has now been appointed to the Oklahoma Abstractors Board. The Oklahoma Abstractors Board oversees all abstract companies in the state. The board ensures that abstract companies abide by state laws and keeps up with new laws enacted by the state. “I feel really great about being appointed to this position,” Ringo, who has been abstracting for a total of 42 years, said.

Baptist Village Communities is thrilled to welcome Alicia Holt to Baptist Village of Cordell as the new village manager. Born and raised in Cordell, Alicia graduated from Cordell High School and the University of Central Oklahoma. She comes to Baptist Village after serving with the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs and The Clinton Veterans Center. “I am passionate about serving senior adults in our community,” says Holt.

Currently serving the residents of Oklahoma’s 55th District, State Representative Todd Russ has set his sights on becoming Oklahoma’s next State Treasurer. Russ, who lives in Cordell, announced via a press release on Tuesday, June 29 that he would be seeking the Republican nomination for State Treasurer in 2022. “I’m a fourth-generation Oklahoma, and I’ve got a lot of real-life career experience to put to work for the people in the state of Oklahoma,” Russ stated.

Carolyn N Heerwald of the financial services firm Edward Jones in Cordell, Ok recently received the firm’s exclusive Spirit of Caring Award designed to recognize those branch office administrators who exemplify the values, culture and spirit of giving back. Heerwald works with Edward Jones Financial Advisor Phil Kliewer. Heerwald was one of only 294 of the firm’s more than 16,000 branch office administrators to receive the award.

Our local Ace Hardware store has a new store manager. Cordell resident, Guy Sperle, took over the position on October 11th. Always friendly and helpful, Guy has worked for Ace Hardware since 2006. He originally began working at the old Ace Hardware on Clay Street here in town and was the Assistant Manager for 2 years before transferring to Elk City’s Ace Hardware in 2009 as their Assistant Manager.
