April 17, 1932–July 22, 2021
Wanita Ethel Hendrix, 89, of Burns Flat passed away July 22, 2021, reuniting in heaven with the love of her life, James, who had died 11 months earlier.
Wanita was born April 17, 1932, in Cordell, Oklahoma, to Earl and Ethel (Kelso) Adams.
She grew up at Adams Lake near Cordell, named in honor of her father, who was the caretaker of the water treatment plant there for approximately 30 years.
She remembered those times fondly, speaking often of the pets, milk cows and even snakes they shared the land with.
She graduated from Burns Flat High School in 1950.
She married James Hendrix on August 26, 1950.
Wanita was a homemaker and devoted mother. They spent their adult lives primarily in the Oklahoma City metro area but moved back to Burns Flat in 1987 upon James’ retirement from OPUBCO.
They were both longtime members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
At James’ passing, they were only four days short of celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.
Wanita is survived by sons Steve, Chad (wife Holly Clanahan) and Richard; and grandchildren James L. II, Jacob and Leeann.
In addition to her husband, Wanita was also preceded in death by a son, James Loy, and a granddaughter, Angel.
Both James and Wanita were known for helping those in need, and in keeping with that spirit, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Step Up Transitional Living (stepuptransition.org), P.O. Box 1016, Weatherford, OK 73096, which assists youth in western Oklahoma experiencing homelessness.
A graveside service for James and Wanita will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30, at Boggy Cemetery, under the direction of Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home of Clinton, Oklahoma.
