Community Is What We Make It

A couple of months ago a small group of people got together to plan out a friendly litle barbecue competition in Cordell. The bragging-rights contest quickly grew from three to nine competitors and turned into a community event in the park.

It wasn’t an Earth-shattering event and it’s certainly not going to change the world, but it made me stop and think about what we have here in Cordell. It is something present in a number of small towns across this great land of ours: a sense of community.

We have a community here that cares about the people in and around it. People came to the barbecue just to hang out and socialize with their friends and neighbors. We talked and laughed and ate and had a good time in each other’s company. We saw old friends and made new ones - together.

I personally want to thank Mike Reimer and Steve McLaughlin for putting this thing together. I’d also like to thank Chad Igo at Pecan Creek for providing the burgers and hot dogs, Alisa Boecker, Tiffani Gallagher, the Cordell cheerleaders, the Cordell Fire Department, the Cordell soccer league, and everyone else who came out to help show us a true sense of community.
