Travis Victory, Cordell Superintendent:
In the coming weeks, the weather will grow warmer, plants will turn greener and – like every school year – our calendars will be even busier. There’s no better time to reflect on the success of Cordell Public Schools. The accomplishments you will read about here would not have been possible without our hardworking team, motivated students, dedicated board of education, involved parents and supportive community. The last two years have been highly productive as we’ve worked to strengthen our schools and help every student reach his/her greatest potential.
Much of our work has been focused on improving our school facilities to meet the needs of today’s learners. We know this work is an ongoing process, and we will continue to evaluate and prioritize needs to make upgrades in a timely manner. Facility improvements so far include: New heating and cooling systems for every school, including the auditorium. This improvement provides a more comfortable learning and working environment for students and staff and will help save money through energy efficiency.
New desks for third- through sixth-grade students. The desks, which have whiteboard tops for writing, provide teachers and students with flexibility to arrange the room however is best for learning and activities. Teachers report that student love writing on their desks, and the teachers love they are learning while they do it!
Remodel old football field house to accommodate more student athletes of all sports.
Future planning for more facility upgrades.
Of course, the primary mission of our district is helping students succeed academically. I am grateful to our teachers and students for their hard work and commitment to excellence. Fortunately, we have a research-based tool that provides us with a roadmap about how we can best help each student with his/her learning – the NWEA MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Test. This assessment allows us to measure achievement and growth in math, reading and language arts. With this information, we provide students with extra support where they need it most and develop a plan to help them meet and exceed their gradelevel goals. Our team works every day to help students be critical thinkers, to know how to collaborate and communicate with others, and to make connections between their lessons and the world around them.
It's always a great day to be Blue Devil but – lately – we’ve been racking up reasons to be proud – in the arts, athletics and academics. While it would be impossible to mention every CPS win, please allow me to share a few:
The high school Academic Team had a successful year, including earning runner-up at state competition. Congratulations!
The district started a full-time Gifted/Talented Program with a dedicated teacher. Students in the program will now receive a full hour of enrichment instruction each week.
CPS is growing work skills and career preparation opportunities for students, including setting a record for next year for the number of students attending Western Technology Center.
Spring athletic programs are gearing up, and we invite all local residents to come out and support our student athletes.
Good luck and best wishes to the soccer, track, baseball, softball and golf teams!
We are seeing growth in our choral program. We have two advancing to State in Choir.
Band received a superior rating at contest on stage and sight reading. The Band will be going to State.
It’s a privilege to serve this great community, alongside our amazing team of administrators, teachers and support professionals.
