Cordell granted independent schedule for 2026-2027 seasons

Three Oklahoma high schools, including Cordell High School, Enid High School, and Capitol Hill High School, have been approved to compete with independent football schedules for the next two seasons, stepping away from their traditional conference alignments.

The decision, announced February 19, 2026, by the state athletic association, followed applications submitted earlier this year from seven Oklahoma high schools seeking scheduling independence. Of those seven, only three were approved.

For Cordell, the move marks a significant shift in how the Blue Devils will approach the 2026 and 2027 football seasons. Competing independently will allow the program to build a customized schedule outside of standard conference requirements.

Head Football Coach Nick Bobeck and school administrators will now begin finalizing opponents for the upcoming two-year stretch.

The independent designation provides greater flexibility in arranging matchups, potentially creating new competitive opportunities and unique game experiences for players and fans. Schools can schedule teams that better align with their program’s competitive goals, enrollment size, and long-term development plans.

However, the decision also raises broader questions about how independent scheduling could impact established conference structures, longtime rivalries, and travel demands across the state. Conference play has traditionally shaped district standings and playoff pathways, and stepping outside that structure can shift the competitive landscape.

As Cordell prepares for this new chapter, community members will be watching closely to see how the independent schedule unfolds and what it means for the future of Blue Devil football.
