Friday night was another rough outing for the Cordell Blue Devils. We played host to the Eagles from Burns Flat in the last of our non-district match ups. Fourteen Blue Devils were suited out.
Junior quarterback Danny Corbin was sidelined for the game. Senior JD Maddox made his first start under center for us. With the injury to Samuel Lindsey, we had to shift players in different positions. This wreaked havoc on our already depleted offense, but we had players step up and play out of their regular positions and out of their comfort zones. They worked hard.
Although most things on the night did not go our way, each player that got on the field gained much needed game experience and reps.
Maddox, Junior Gage Miller, and Sophomore Dayton Bartlett all contributed to the rushing effort. Passing yards on offense were hard to come by, but they ran the ball hard the entire night. Defensively, they had a better second half. The tackling improved and we were able to get more stops.
This week we enter our bye week. We have a lot of things to sure up and lots of work to do leading to our game with Empire next week. We will continue to work on our blocking schemes, and we will get some of these guys more reps and try to work to get them more comfortable in their new positions.
This group of athletes work hard, and they have the drive to be better than they were the week before.
We will be traveling to Empire, Friday the 23rd. Kick off is at 7:00. If you can’t make the drive, tune in to Blue Devil TV on YouTube and listen to Mike and Dudley call the game. We thank you all for your support so far in this young season and GO BIG BLUE! B.I.T.S.
