Despite the unorthodox end to the last school year and the COVID-impacted school workout schedule, the Cordell Lady Blue Devils are already looking ahead to a strong basketball season this year.

The girls’ high school basketball team had been working out for seven weeks, before a COVID exposure brought things to a screeching halt. A female junior high basketball player’s step-mother contracted the virus, and the player continued to attend practice, unaware of the exposure. Upon receiving this information workouts were immediately canceled by the school and a two week long break from practice was issued.

The morning workout sessions had brought in 35 to 40 girls every morning. The girls spent those sessions working hard on agility, strength, speed, and accuracy. The team ran drills and scrimmages often to find any weaknesses in the team and strengthen any problem areas. The Lady Blue Devils had also visited the weight room often to bulk up and get ready to take charge.

Head Coach Jana Rogers reported that the girls are “stronger, faster, and more skilled“ than they were last year. There is no issue with lack of motivation with this team, these girls want to win and they are ready to fight for it.

Rogers told The Beacon, “this is one of the better summers I’ve seen in awhile, I can see a lot of talent coming up, these girls have a lot of desire.” That desire will be crucial in kickstarting a winning season.

This October the girls will take the court, with high hopes for a winning season. The girls are sure that the teamwork skills they have worked so hard to build will bring them to the top. Working together like a family, it’s obvious that basketball is more than just a sport to them. According to teammate Andrea Palmer, their main mission is to shred the competition.
