Despite the valiant efforts of the Cordell Blue Devil football team, the season opener resulted in a loss by three points.

The Blue Devils kicked off the game, starting the Eagles on offense. The Devils got a hold of the ball after their first stop and started to put together an impressive drive, but stalled on an interception on a fourth and long.

Defensively the Devils held the eagles well, until a broken play in the second quarter resulted in an Eagle touchdown, breaking down the Blue Devil’s morale.

The Devils came out strong during the second half, with a little more pep in their step. They received the ball and traveled down the field, but alas they were stopped by the Eagles.

In a scramble for points during the third quarter Quarterback Raydon Kuehne kicked a field goal. It was a defensive game from there on out, ending with a score of 3-6.

According to head coach Zane Trammell, the loss was a result of inexperience and busted offensive plays.

“I really felt like we beat ourselves as much as we lost to Sayre.” He said, “Before next week we are gonna have to sharpen up mentally, so we can know what’s going on and be able to translate from the sideline to the huddle.”

Trammell told The Beacon, “The offense played well, they gave up a few yards, but got stops when they needed to.”

Senior Adden Zanghi, who plays offensive fullback and defensive middle linebacker, chalks up the loss to simple mistakes.

“There’s a list of things that beat us: ourselves, inability to get a play in, being young across the board, and the 110 degree heat.” He said “We just couldn’t keep our heads, we were making tons of offensive mistakes like dropping passes and missing blocks.”

Coach believes the next game will be very similar, with a close matchup. Trammel said, “The team that makes the least amount of mistakes is going to win. Tonight we made the most mistakes and ended up getting beat by three points. Hopefully we can be the sharper team next week and come away with a win”

Zanghi believes this loss will only make them hungrier for a win in their next game. “Going into another week of practice and having one of our linemen back is gonna give us an opportunity to expand our playchart, and have a good shot at redemption. We are hungry for a win, and we aren’t willing to let it slip through our fingers like it did in Sayre.”

The Cordell Blue Devils will play their next game on the road at 7:00 pm on September 4th against the Rush Springs Redskins. The Cordell Cheer Squad encourages everyone to wear gold at this game to show your spirit while supporting our Blue Devil Boys.
