The Bessie Fire Department, a cornerstone of the Bessie community, underwent a significant reorganization in 1973, marking a new chapter in its history that began in 1904. In 1983, construction on one of the current firestation buildings commenced, further solidifying their dedication to fire safety.
Two of the other buildings being used by the fire department were constructed in the 1920s. Structurally

For almost ten years, the Bessie community has diligently saved tax money through sales tax in Washita County. This collective effort, combined with a grant, has enabled the construction of a new fire station to further Bessie FD’s commitment to safety and preparedness.
The new station will be in the exact location of the current station. The old buildings were demolished starting on April 15. Over the past few weeks, the fire department has been salvaging various parts of the building. This endeavor is not only practical but also symbolic, as it represents the department’s commitment to preserving Bessie’s history and incorporating it into their new station.
The fire department will reuse the antique ceiling tiles in the newly constructed office and meeting room. Preserving original pieces and antique findings of the buildings is essential to the department and the community. Original brick will be used to construct a veneer wall along Main Street in Bessie, and other items, such as artifacts and an antique hose cart that was still in use in the 1970s, will be displayed in the new fire department.
The oldest continuously maintained fire equipment in the county will also be put on display: a 16’ ladder purchased by the original Besse Fire Department in 1904.
