Sheriff’s Dept. receives grant

The Washita County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a $150,000 grant through the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office as part of a statewide initiative to strengthen law enforcement services across Oklahoma.

Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced July 6 that $18 million in grant funding has been distributed to sheriff’s offices in all 77 Oklahoma counties. The grant program, established by the Oklahoma Legislature in 2024, provides awards ranging from $150,000 to $300,000 based on each county’s total tangible property valuation.

Washita County Sheriff Kevin Rozell said this marks the third consecutive year the county has received funding through the program.

“This is the third time we have received the grant,” Rozell said. “The previous two years, we received $250,000, but because our county assessed property values went down, we fell into the $150,000 grant level.”

Rozell said a portion of the funding will be used to purchase a new Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle, while the remaining funds will support the sheriff’s office’s maintenance and operational expenses.

“The grant will be used to purchase a new Chevy Tahoe, and the rest will be used for maintenance and operation,” Rozell said. “The funds will be used for vehicle maintenance, fuel, tires, and vehicle repairs throughout the year.” According to the Attorney General’s Office, grant funds may be used for a variety of sheriff’s office needs, including operations, training, technology, equipment, capital improvements, and employee stipends.

Drummond said the program continues to provide important support for law enforcement agencies across the state.

“Rural sheriff’s offices are stretched thin, and this funding gives them real resources to serve their communities,” Drummond said. “I’m glad to see this program continue to deliver for all 77 counties, and I thank the Oklahoma Sheriffs’ Association and county sheriffs for their partnership in putting these dollars to work.”

The funding was established by the Legislature and appropriated to the Attorney General’s Office through the state’s 2026 budget.
