The Cordell Blue Devils played host to the Mangum Tigers Friday night at Blue Devil Stadium. Mangum came to town sitting in 3nd place in district play.
The Blue Devils once again came in shorthanded and suited up only 13 players to start the game, and by half time, we were down to 12.
This year has been a learning experience for all of us. We have a mix of kids, some that should still be playing at the junior high level, some that have played since they were little kids. This year we have some that have never played a down in their lives, and we are asking them to start high school football games.
We have a good group of kids that come to work and come to compete. We are proud of them. They keep showing up and working to make themselves better.
Our offense had another rough week, but we were able to run the ball better than the last couple of weeks. Sophomore Dayton Bartlett lead our rushing attack this week with 17 rushes for 46 yards.
Senior JD Maddox had 9 carries for 15 yards. We couldn’t get the passing game going, unfortunately. Mangum had a very good pass rush, and we didn’t have much time to get a pass off.
Defensively, we started out okay. We were able to make a few stops, but when you are playing iron man football, players tend to get winded. When you take a down or two off, it gives the other team a chance to capitalize.
The defense gave up one touchdown on the ground right after halftime but was able to keep the Tigers out of the end-zone the rest of the game.
We had some more of our younger players getting valuable snaps on defense. They were able to gain experience to help us for the last two games of the season.
This Friday, we will travel down to Snyder to take on the Cyclones for the final road trip of the year. The Cyclones are sitting in the 4th Spot in our district after knocking off Hobart last week.
Snyder is a very decent team. They like to run the ball on offense and will pass some. Their offense is centered around their running back, and he’s a pretty good ball player.
We have been working this week on a couple of things to slow down their rushing attack and working to improve some things on offense.
If you can’t make the road trip with us, tune in to Blue Devil TV on YouTube! Kick off is at 7:00. B.I.T.S Go BIG BLUE!
