SWODA honors National Family Caregivers Month

. November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor the dedication and compassion of those who provide care for their loved ones. The observance recognizes caregivers for their selfless support and acknowledges the many challenges they face while tending to family members and friends in need.

The South Western Oklahoma Development Authority (SWODA) Area Agency on Aging (AAA) encourages caregivers to prioritize their own well-being through respite services—temporary breaks that allow them to rest and recharge.

“Caregivers give so much of themselves to others,” said Joanie Swanson, Caregiver Program Coordinator with SWODA’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA). “Respite allows them to take a well-deserved break, even for a few hours, so they can continue providing the best possible care.” Respite simply means a break. Studies show that caregivers who take time for themselves—whether to attend appointments, visit friends, see a movie, or just take a nap—experience less stress and better overall health.

Through a partnership with the Oklahoma Human Services Aging Services Division, SWODA AAA provides respite services for eligible caregivers, including: *Individuals of any age caring for someone 60 or older who needs assistance with at least two Activities of Daily Living, such as dressing, bathing, or walking, or who requires significant help due to cognitive impairment.

*Grandparents or relatives age 55 or older who are the primary caregivers of grandchildren, step-grandchildren, or related children under age 18, with either a legal or informal caregiving relationship.

Qualified caregivers may receive $500 in respite vouchers to hire a provider of their choice (excluding individuals under 18 or those living in the same household). There are no income or resource limits to participate. To apply, contact Joanie Swanson at SWODA AAA by calling 580-562-5026.

SWODA AAA serves all eligible individuals without regard to race, national origin, ancestry, color, religion, gender, age, or disability.

The South Western Oklahoma Development Authority (SWODA) is one of 11 Councils of Government in Oklahoma, serving communities across Beckham, Custer, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa, Roger Mills, and Washita counties. Through its Agency on Aging, SWODA provides programs and services that promote independence, dignity, and quality of life for older adults, caregivers, and families throughout southwestern Oklahoma.
