Early investments in education can have a lasting impact for Oklahoma families

For many Oklahoma families planning for a child’s future can feel uncertain. But one thing is clear: investing early in education can make an impactful difference.

Nearly two decades ago, Oklahoma launched the SEED for Oklahoma Kids, or SEED OK, program. It was a simple but powerful idea: automatically open an Oklahoma 529 education savings accounts for children and, for many families, provide an initial deposit of $1,000 to help them get started. Those funds could be used later for college, career technology centers or job training. SEED OK reached thousands of Oklahoma children, helping families begin saving earlier than they otherwise could.

Recent research conducted by the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis shows students who received funded accounts were more focused on education and had saved more for their future. It also found children from lower-income households and rural areas had greater expectations about continuing their education and were nearly six times as likely to have a parent-owned OK 529 account, reinforcing how early access to savings tools can shape long-term outcomes.

I recently heard from Syniah, a SEED OK participant now attending Langston University. She said the account gave her confidence and motivation to pursue college. Her mother shared that knowing those funds were there encouraged their family to stay focused on academic success throughout her school years.

Through SEED OK, Oklahoma has led the nation by being one of the first states to demonstrate how Children’s Savings Accounts help strengthen families, build assets and raise expectations for the next generation. Families can build on that foundation by opening or contributing to an Oklahoma 529 account, turning early support into longterm opportunity.

No matter where you live — on a farm, in a small town or in a growing community — every child deserves the opportunity to dream bigger and plan ahead.
