The Cordell Lions Club, a cherished local institution dedicated to service, is facing a challenge that could threaten its future. With membership numbers dwindling and some active members advancing in age, the Lions Club needs new members to carry on its community service work.
Club member Bob Plummer expressed the club’s current struggles, noting, “It’s dwindled down, and we just don’t seem to have the interest of younger people.” This decline could strain the club’s ability to maintain its traditional activities, including its annual fundraiser golf tournament, flag placements around town, and weekly Meals on Wheels deliveries. “We’ve always put the Christmas lights out, but it’s getting to the point where only four or five members are able to do that,” he added.
The Cordell Lions Club is the last civic club in town, and without new members, it could be lost entirely. Many club members urge anyone interested in making a difference to consider joining. Membership is straightforward: as Bob explained, “They just take an application to apply.” Those interested in joining can contact a local club member or Lions Club President McRae Brunker at Great Plains Bank for an application.
Membership dues are $20 per month, covering the cost of meetings and meals, making it an accessible option for those interested in giving back. The Membership supports local causes and provides access to an extended network of service-minded individuals dedicated to the Lions’ enduring motto, “We serve.” One of the Cordell Lions Club’s key services is assisting community members in need of eyeglasses. For those who qualify, the club helps with purchasing eyewear, providing a helping hand to those who may lack vision insurance or sufficient coverage.
Joining the Lions Club means more than just attending meetings; it’s about connecting with others who share a commitment to service and contributing to a greater cause. From community clean-ups and helping seniors to organizing meal deliveries, Lions support people in need close to home. Straight from the Lion’s mouth, “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else.” Melvin Jones, the founder of the Lions Club, famous words became the basis for the club’s motto, “We serve”.
The Lions Club’s impact on Cordell is greatly appreciated, but without an influx of new members, the future of its legacy is uncertain. For those interested in making an impact locally, the Lions Club is calling.
