Oklahoma Unveils the New Iconic Oklahoma License Plate

As of September 1, 2024, Oklahomans have a new way to show their state pride on the road with the launch of the “Iconic Oklahoma Plate.” The new standard-issue license plate, designed by Oklahoma City-based marketing and advertising firm Freestyle Creative, features a bold red background, white lettering, and the intriguing “Imagine That” tagline at the bottom.

The plate’s design celebrates Oklahoma’s unique heritage, showcasing hand-drawn silhouettes of iconic landmarks and state symbols. The Skydance Bridge, Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, and the famed Route 66 are among the many illustrations. The Sacred Rain Arrow statue, a nod to Native American culture, is prominently featured alongside images of a wind turbine and waving wheat, representing Oklahoma’s agricultural and renewable energy contributions.

Animal lovers will appreciate the inclusion of the American bison, the state mammal, and the red-tailed hawk, the state raptor. Meanwhile, the Golden Driller stands tall as a tribute to Oklahoma’s oil industry, and the design nods to state history with the star-46 icon, which appeared on Oklahoma’s first state flag from 1911 to 1925.

Many Oklahomans have already expressed excitement about the new design, praising it as a welcome change from previous plates. The “Iconic Oklahoma Plate” celebrates the state’s diversity and rich history and introduces a fresh and dynamic look that residents are eager to showcase.

For those keen on sporting the new plate, it won’t automatically be sent out with registration renewals. Instead, Oklahomans can request the latest design by paying a $4 replacement fee when renewing their vehicle registration at a local licensed operator or $9 if outside their renewal period. Additionally, anyone registering a new vehicle after September 1, 2024, and not transferring an existing plate will automatically receive the new design.

While the new plate echoes the style of an existing specialty plate that highlights Oklahoma’s original state flag—featuring the number 46 within a white star on a red field—it subtly shifts from historical sentiment to a modern state branding with the phrase “Imagine That.”

For those who love the current scissortail design, fear not—the option to keep it is still available. Introducing the “Iconic Oklahoma Plate” allows drivers to choose how they want to represent their pride in the Sooner State, whether with a nod to tradition or a celebration of the state’s evolving identity.

As Oklahomans hit the road this fall, the vibrant new plates will add a splash of state pride and a touch of “Imagine That” magic to highways and byways across the state.
