Cordell man faces possible prison time after break-in

Joseph Franklyn Smalley of Cordell was arrested on September 13th after police responded to multiple reports of intrusion alarms being set off at local businesses.

According to police records, the alarm was triggered at Slice 183 around 4:30 a.m. Then, the suspect allegedly entered JD’s Bargains through an open rear door and was confronted by the store’s manager, Laramie Norris, which resulted in Smalley fleeing into the alleyway.

At approximately 7:20 a.m., Smalley attempted to enter High Plains Bank. The bank Manager indicated to Smalley that they could not open the door until business hours. He began yelling and demanding that the door be opened, but when the Manager refused, he eventually left.

Officers approached Smalley at Kwik N Eze, where he was sitting outside, but he ran away when he saw them. Officers began searching the area and observed an open door behind 113 S. Market. They entered the building owned by Alex Thomison and confronted Smalley. Police Chief Dustin Denney informed Smalley he was under arrest and instructed him to walk to him. Assistant Chief Trevor Stewart moved to handcuff Smalley and Smalley attempted to make a run for the back door. Denney and Stewart caught him at the door where Smalley continued to struggle. They were eventually able to handcuff him and take him into custody.

After the arrest it was found that Smalley was caught on camera banging on the door and windows of Bully Dreamz and that he had triggered the alarm system there. He had also allegedly attempted to enter a private residence above 107 N. Market but was unable to open the door. The resident discovered evidence that someone, presumedly Smalley, had also tried to look in the windows of their vehicle.

Smalley is currently being held at the Washita County Jail for the felony charge of Burglary in the Second Degree with a bond amount of $25,000. He faces a possibility of up to seven years in prison if convicted.
