If you’re looking for a place to get a great steak, fresh-ground hamburger meat, or a gift for anyone on your list, Mike’s Meats in Cordell is a great place to start.
Mike Reimer, Cordell native, started the store on the Cordell square in 2017. “I worked at United in the grocery department in the 10th grade. I was very interested in the meat department while I worked there, had grown up around cattle, and decided to go to the Meat Processing and Marketing program at the Burns Flat Vo-Tech after graduation. I graduated with top honors from that program where I learned anatomy, muscle structures, meat cuts, sausage making, and retailing in a great environment. It only reinforced my interest in meat.”
Reimer began a career in the meat department at United Supermarkets, and was a Meat Manager at the Hollis and Altus stores. He also spent time with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector and is an award-winning taxidermist.
“I was wanting a change from what I was doing, and wanted to combine what I love the most, meat and talking to people.” In Mike’s Meats, he has created a fun atmosphere to offer quality products.
“I have a passion for the meat industry, and always have. My store is here to offer you the best and most fresh meat around. I take a great amount of pride in offering a quality product at a great price” Mike’s Meats recently moved to the highway and is now located at 221 N. Glenn English, next to the park.
“We had a great place downtown and loved it there, but we outgrew it. When this building came open, it presented an opportunity to be more visible and offer more room to meat and side options.”
Mike’s family has been a valuable contribution as well. “My sister, Cindy Banks, and her girls Cloie and Carlie have been a vital part of this store from the very beginning. My boys, Brady and Thomas have worked many hours and been a great help. My wife Amanda is the one behind the gift selections and she does a great job finding unique and useful kitchen products and toys. My daughter Maren has grown up here, and any of the kids we have had working for us have been part of our family as well. We love our meat crew.”
Mike’s best seller is his Wet-Aged Ribeye steaks. People drive from miles away to get a great steak, either right from the counter or custom-cut to their specifications.
“We have regular customers that come from Altus, Binger, Weatherford, and even Texas. Many people stop by on their way to visit kids or family and get a meat pack to take with them.”
Mike’s has lots of beef, pork, and chicken offerings, frozen foods like broccoli and corn, and specialty items like breaded hushpuppies and fried mushrooms. Mike makes his own breakfast sausage and has four flavors of beef jerky strips to choose from.
The gift section has kitchen staples from utensils to name brand cast-iron pots that are great for wedding registries, men’s gifts like knives and soaps, and there are always fun items for kids, be it toys or books.
He sums up his store, “We have a great atmosphere. We are very customer oriented, and want you to feel good the minute you walk in the store. I love talking to and meeting people, and appreciate that people trust me with something as important as food.
We have lots of good ideas for our new location, and hope to start offering some hot lunch items like barbecue sandwiches and rotisserie chickens soon.”
