This residence on 7th Street in Cordell caught fire on Sunday afternoon, January 8th. Cordell Fire Chief Seth Slaughterback said that the 1000 square foot home was 50% engulfed. There were no significant injuries, although the home’s resident, Bryan Barber, who is an amputee with one leg, had to be pulled from the burning structure. Early investigation points to the use of candles in the residence due to no electric power as the source of the blaze. Units from Bessie, Cloud Chief, Rocky and Cordell responded. Fire Chief Slaughterback told the Beacon “I really want to thank the Washita County Sheriff’s Office and the Cordell Police Department for their assistance. Not only did they control traffic but they helped us stow gear and roll hoses after the fire was out. We appreciate their teamwork.”
