Each year the Cordell Fire Department treats children from Cordell Elementary to a fun-filled day during Fire Safety Week. Students learn about fire safety, slide down the fire pole, shoot water from fire hoses, and in recent years, enjoy a hot dog lunch prepared by local firefighters.
While no one is sure exactly when this tradition started it is certain that many generations of area kids have looked forward to their day at the fire station and especially the ride from the school to the downtown square atop fire trucks with sirens blaring.
Many of the firemen fondly recall their own childhood field trips to the station and some now even get to play host to children of their own. The years pass and faces change but one thing is for sure: the excitement never wanes for both the kids and the men and women who make these memories possible.
