This weekend, residents will have the chance to experience Cordell’s first-ever 4th of July Hometown Celebration event.
The event is being put on in collaboration by the Cordell Chamber of Commerce and the Cordell Fire Department.
Last year, Chamber of Commerce secretary Sarah Lau and firefighter Jason Dudgeon got together to discuss the possibility of hosting this event in 2020.
However, with the pandemic occurring at that time, plans for the event had to be tabled until things settled down.
“This year [Jason] came to me and he said, ‘Hey, what about that 4th of July event?’ And I said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Lau said.
Now, residents will be able to enjoy festivities throughout the day on July 3. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this weekend.
The day will start with a parade on Third Street, and end with a fireworks display put on by the fire department at the airport.
With this being a family event, the chamber and fire department set up multiple events throughout the day.
Those in the parade currently include the fire department, the courthouse, Slice 183, Western Oklahoma Weather, and Hillbilly Fireworks. Anybody is welcome to sign up to be in the parade and can do so by contacting the Chamber.
Following the parade, residents will have the chance to shop around as vendors from home-based businesses will be ready to start selling their goods. Food vendors for the event include Mexican food, pizza and subs, and kettle corn.
The cornhole tournament will begin at 11 a.m. and those interested in competing will be able to register by calling the Chamber from now until the day of the event.
This tournament is set up by the Chamber of Commerce and profits from it will go towards the Chamber.
Throughout the entire day, kids will have the chance to bounce around one of the 14 jump houses set up by the fire department.
Admission to all the jump houses throughout the day is $10 and the profits raised will go towards the fire partment.
With how hot the Oklahoma weather has gotten lately, you might want to cool down at the pool which will have a free swim day from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. that day. To finish off the day, head over to the airport to enjoy the firework show.
One thing Lau stressed was that they are asking attendants of the firework show to not set off their own fireworks while out at the airport.
This, however, only applies to the day of the event and residents will be able to set off their fireworks there the following day on July 4.
Overall, Lau assured us that there will be something for all residents to enjoy that day and invited everyone to come out.
“[Residents] come out, because if we can get enough people out here and support it, then we’ll be able to continue this on in the future.”
