Councilwoman Cheryl Wedel loses battle with cancer

Long time city council member Cheryl Wedel died of cancer on Friday June 4.

Wedel served on the city council for more than 8 years, representing Ward 3 of Cordell.

Before serving as a member of Cordell’s city council, Wedel served on the Planning and Zoning Board and the Historical Preservation Committee for many years.

She continued to serve on the both of those-boards as a liaison even after being elected to city council.

Former city council member Vickie Dunlap, who worked alongside Wedel, described Wedel as a thorough person who would research before voting on city matters, with the pool being one of the matters she was most concerned about

“She was an encouragement to people to just be patient and kind and not get upset about things. She was just a good person and just had a heart as good as gold. I’m going to miss her,” Dunlap said. “I feel like she did what she was on city council for. Even though she was sick she still tried to help them do as much as she could. She didn’t take any sympathy. She was always really positive about stuff.”

City administrator J.C. Moser said that Wedel will be greatly missed, and that she was a dedicated council member for as long as Moser has been in Cordell.

“Cheryl has always been extremely community oriented and has worked to serve the citizens of New Cordell, sometimes making difficult decisions that would benefit many instead of the few,” Moser said.
