Denver Horn is selected as Oklahoma Veteran of the Week
Washita County resident Denver Horn was recently chosen as Veteran of the Week and recognized by the Oklahoma legislature.
On April 12, 2021, Horn had a ceremony held for him in his honor in the Oklahoma House of Representatives that was hosted by Rep. Todd Russ.
“I so appreciate the dedication and sacrifice Mr. Horn displayed in serving our nation and protecting our lives and liberties,” Russ said. “It was an honor to recognize him in the House for his selfless actions.”
Russ, along with State Sen. Brent Howard recognized Horn’s achievements throughout his life with a special emphasis on his military service in the Vietnam War.
In honor of being named Veteran of the Week, Horn was presented with a certificate as well as an American flag that had been flown at the state Capitol in his honor.
“It’s an incredible honor and an awesome experience,” Horn said. “It was brief, but it was really thrilling and it touched me deeply... It’s a wonderful memory that Representative Todd Ross and Senator Brent Howard presented me with.”
Joining Horn at his ceremony as witnesses to the event were his fellow Cordell High School graduates Don Williams, Alan Hull, Charles Rainbolt, and Judy Ploch and her husband Quinton.
After joining the United States Army in 1967, Horn immediately went through basic training and AIT school.
After receiving deployment orders to attend non-commissioned officer training school at Ft. Benning, he was commissioned as an E5 Sergeant and an infantry squad leader in Vietnam.
While in Vietnam, Horn was wounded in action resulting in him being released from active duty and medically discharged in 1969.
He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star Medal, as well as the Purple Heart Medal.
Now living in Corn as a retired farmer, Horn said he enjoys spending his time with his family and grandchildren, as well as enjoying liberty.
“I would encourage any vet that would ever be approached by their representative or Senator [for Veteran of the Week] to grab this opportunity.”
