Washita County collision claims life of Tuttle woman

A woman from Tuttle died last week in a two-vehicle collision on I-40 in Washita County.

State Trooper Trent Cagle, of the OHP Traffic Homicide Unit, identified the woman who died as Sandra Lucas, 42.

Cagle reported she was a passenger in a 2012 Ford F-250 driven by Shane Lucas, 45, also of Tuttle.

Sandra Lucas was pronounced dead at the scene by Medical Examiner Kathy Valentine, the trooper said.

Shane Lucas was transported from the scene by Elk City EMS and later transferred to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Cagle reported.

Two other passengers, both juvenile males, one 12 and the other 16, were taken by Elk City EMS to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City. Both were treated and released, the trooper said.

The 12-year-old suffered a leg injury and the 16-year-old suffered trunk and internal injuries, Cagle reported.

The trooper said all occupants in the pickup were pinned for about one hour before being extricated by the Elk City Fire Department using the Hurst tools.

Cagle reported the fatality collision occurred about 3 p.m. on I-40 near mile marker 45.5, about one mile west of Canute in Washita County on Dec. 23.

The other vehicle involved, Cagle said, was a 2020 Volvo semi-tractor driven by Singh Gurpreet, 27, of Bakersfield, Calif. He was not injured.

The trooper said both vehicles were traveling westbound on I-40. The pickup truck was in the inside lane and the semi was in the outside lane. The pickup passed the semi and as the pickup cleared the semi, the pickup sustained a wind gust causing the boxtype utility trailer towed by the pickup to begin to overturn, Cagle reported.

As the pickup driver applied the brakes, he lost control, entered a jackknife and the vehicle traveled sideways in front of the semi. The trooper said the semi driver attempted to swerve right but was unable to avoid a collision.

The semi struck the pickup on the passenger side causing both vehicles to leave the roadway to the right and the pickup rolled one-half time coming to rest in the north ditch of I-40, the trooper reported.

Condition of both drivers at the time of the collision was apparently normal, Cagle said. Cause of the collision is under investigation, he added.

Seat belts were equipped and in use by all occupants of the pickup truck and equipped and in use by the semi driver, according to the report.

The trooper pointed to strong winds at the time of the collision.

Assisting Trooper Cagle were Lt. Aaron Hunter and troopers Pate Gossen, Tyler Smith and Chris Laufer. Also assisting were the Elk City Fire Department, and EMS, Canute Fire Department and EMS, Washita County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office.
