City Council recap: Good things on the rise for Cordell

Several topics were discussed during the regular meeting of the Cordell City Council Monday night, and the evening’s theme seemed to be ‘positive progress’ for the community.

The downtown personalized paver project is scheduled for installation soon, with Council voting to move ahead with the hiring of a contractor who will complete the work. The old pavers will have to be removed and the new engraved pavers will be mortared into place. The contractor will also repair any damaged areas in the sidewalks.

The Lions Club has partnered with the City of Cordell in the purchase and install surveillance cameras throughout Lee Park. Russell Electric completed the installation work and the Electric Department assisted with mounting the cameras. Dobson Communications will complete the final step of connecting internet service to the cameras. There have been multiple cases of vandalism in the park and city officials are hopeful that the cameras will deter future incidents.

A home building company has expressed interest in building fourteen new homes in Cordell. The project is in very early stages and more information will be available as plans progress.

Holiday lighting will be installed on the courthouse again this year, thanks to the generosity of CKenergy. The light display was a huge success last year and really brought a special festive feeling to the downtown square.

Council unanimously approved the closing of side streets adjacent to the square for the Chamber of Commerce’s Spook the Square Halloween event on October 31st and again for the Christmas on the Square event on December 4th.

Directional signage is being developed for various areas in Cordell. Plans include welcoming signs with LED lighting where each highway enters town as well as decorative metal signs directing visitors toward various points of interest in town, such as the library, movie theater, and more.

City Council meetings are typically held on the third Monday of each month. Agendas will be posted on the window at City Hall on the preceding Friday. The public is always welcome and encouraged to attend.
