Soccer Teams Fall To Christian Heritage

Cordell’s soccer teams had a slow week last week, playing just one game against Christian Heritage on Tuesday, April 8.

The Lady Blue Devils got off to a slow start, falling behind 4-0 at the half. In the second half of play Erin Dudgeon scored once, but Christian Heritage added in two of their own to win the game, 6-1.

The boys also trailed by a score of 4-0 at the end of the first half. In the second period Kolby Dowell put one past the goalkeeper, but the Blue Devils fell, 5-1.

Blue Devils Show Character Through Tough Week

The Cordell Blue Devils had a rough go of things last week, dropping two games to Mangum and one to Navajo, but walloping Blair at their own tourney.

Cordell started the week at home Monday against the top ten ranked Mangum Tigers. In a runrule shortened game, the Tigers walked off the field with an 11-0 victory. Sophomore pitcher Ryan Neeley took the loss on the mound, throwing four strikeouts and walking six. Drayton Maddox recorded a double and James Ivy added a single for Cordell’s only hits in the game.

The Blue Devils traveled to Navajo Tuesday, and suffered another big loss, 16-3. Paxton Switzer took the loss on the hill, but also hit a double in the game. Koby Celsor and Brady Reimer also each contributed singles in the effort.

Soccer Teams Lose To Chickasha, Elgin, and Weatherford

Cordell’s boys and girls soccer teams struggled last week, each dropping games to Chickasha, Elgin, and Weatherford.

The teams opened the week Tuesday, April 2, on the road in Chickasha. Cordell’s girls took Chickasha to double overtime before giving up the only goal of the game, falling 1-0. The Cordell boys lost 6-0.

The weekend brought Elgin and Weatherford to town for Friday and Saturday matches, respectively. The girls fell to Elgin 5-0 and the boys, 3-1, with Cameron Cochran scoring Cordell’s solo goal on a penalty kick. The Lady Blue Devils were shut down 10-0 by Weatherford on Saturday, April 6, and the boys lost 6-0.

Cordell Baseball Goes 4-0 For The Week

The Cordell Blue Devils had an outstanding week on the diamond, going undefeated against Sayre, Burns Flat-Dill City, Okarche, and Cashion. The boys earned their way into the championship of the Hinton Tournament, but the game was postponed due to weather.

“I’m extremely proud of my boys,” said head coach Bobby Blackburn. “We had a great week, going 4-0 and earning a spot in the Hinton Tournament championship. Our pitching was outstanding, backed up by timely defense. Our bats got hot from the top to the bottom of our order.”

The Blue Devils started the week off strong in Sayre, knocking off the Eagles 14-0 in a run-rule shortened game. Koby Celsor earned the win from the mound, throwing a perfect game and striking out eight batters.

Soccer Teams Fall Against Clinton

Cordell’s soccer teams opened their district match schedules with tough losses to Clinton on Tuesday, March 26, 2019.

The Lady Blue Devils played first, facing off against a strong Lady Red Tornado team. Cordell’s girls fought a hard battle in the first half of play, with goal keeper Andrea Palmer only giving up one score against an aggressive Clinton offense. The tone changed in the second half, though, and the Lady Devils ended up on the losing end of a 10-0 scoreboard.

Blue Devils Go Four Out Of Five For The Week

The Cordell Blue Devils made an impressive run last week, winning four out of five games, including two out of three at the Shortgrass Conference Tournament in Hobart over the weekend.

The Blue Devils started the week at home against Snyder on Monday, March 25, 2019. The Cordell boys came from behind to claim in the win in the bottom of the seventh inning, 8-7. Paxton Switzer earned the win on the pitcher’s mound giving up seven hits and striking out eight. Switzer hit two singles and a home run, Brady Reimer added two more singles, Kolby Rivera, Koby Celsor, Dane Corbin, and James Ivy all contributed base hits to the effort.

“We dug ourselves into a hole early, but were able to regroup and climbed out,” said head coach Bobby Blackburn. “We are swinging the bats better but our defense has to improve.”

Blue Devils Bounce Back To Beat Snyder

The Cordell Blue Devils fell behind early in Monday’s game against Snyder, but battled back from a four-run deficit to claim the 8-7 victory at home.

After falling behind 6-1 after the top of the fourth inning, Paxton Switzer started the Blue Devils’ comeback with a solo home run against a first-pitch fastball. Switzer’s dinger earned the Blue Devils a pizza party, sponsored by The Cordell Beacon and Azzolio’s at the Creek.

Blue Devils Split Spring Break Baseball Games

Despite being out of school for spring break, the Cordell Blue Devils played Friday and Saturday games last week. The boys split the match-ups, losing at Cache and winning at Blair.

In the first game of the weekend the boys in blue battled the Bulldogs of Cache, and found themselves coming up on the short end of an 11-3 scoreboard. The Blue Devils got on the board early with a first-inning score, but Cache quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the first and rode it through to the end.

“It was just a case of them being bigger, faster, and stronger,” said Cordell coach Bobby Blackburn. “We competed well, put the ball in play, and made plays. Raydon Kuehne made just a tremendous play at second on a running catch. Koby Celsor threw a nice game. He struck out nine, walked two, and gave up just six hits. Celsor, Kuehne, Kolby Rivera, Brady Reimer, Drayton Maddox, and James Ivy all singled.”

Coach Taylor’s Soccer News & Notes

The Cordell Junior High and High School soccer teams began the season on Monday, March 11th at Elk City.

The JH Lady Devils played a good first half but gave up 3 goals towards the end of the first half to trail 3-0 at halftime. They played a much better second half and didn’t allow another goal. The JH girls lost the match 3-0.

The JH boys had to play with only eight players. They played a hard fought match but ended up losing the match 8-0.

The Lady Devils played a good first half and only trailed at halftime 3-1. Erin Dudgeon scored the goal for the Lady Devils. The Lady Devils ran out of gas in the second half and lost the match 7-1.

Blue Devil Golfers Earn First Place at BFDC Tourney

Despite harsh wind conditions, the Cordell Blue Devils boys golf team kept their heads in the game and their balls inbounds and secured the team victory at the Burns Flat-Dill City tournament last week.

The Blue Devils shot a combined 378 to take first place, led by Raydon Kuehne. Kuehne’s 85 earned him second place on the individual leaderboard, followed by Koby Celsor’s 91, which was good enough for fifth overall. Dane Corbin shot a 95 to claim sixth place and Parker Johnson shot 107 to finished 10th. Tugger Selman shot 130.

“The Golf Gods were on our side today, because Mother Nature was not,” said coach Jake Weiderstein. “We played bogey golf and just tried to stay in-bounds. It paid off for us.”
