“We had solid offensive production, with lots of people scoring,” said Cordell Head Coach Jana Rogers about her team’s 50 to 22 victory over the Snyder Lady Cyclones on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

“We also played good defense and were able to work on our man-to-man coverage, especially in the final quarter.”

Cordell Lady Blue Devils Defeat BF-DC

The Cordell High School Lady Blue Devils held top-20 ranked Mangum to 32 points, their lowest offensive output this season, but had a difficult time finding the basket and fell 21 to 32. “Mangum is a really good team and we knew it would be a tough game, but we were looking forward to it,” said Cordell Head Coach Jana Rogers. “

We struggled on offense, shooting only 14%, but our defense was outstanding.” At the end of the first quarter Cordell was up 5 to 3 but a 2-point second quarter had them trailing 7 to 19 at the half. “We fought back,” Rogers noted, “these girls keep fighting back in these situations.” The Cordell defense put on a show in the third period, holding Mangum to only three points, trimming the Blue Devil deficit to only 5 points, 17 to 22, as the final quarter began. “We weren’t getting to the line often enough,” Rogers said, “but we only missed one free throw all evening.”

CHS Blue Devils Defeat Mangum, BF-DC

“It was a good week,” said Cordell Head Coach Brandon Gallagher after the Blue Devils defeated both Mangum and Burns Flat-Dill City. On Tuesday, January 23, the Cordell hosted Mangum, a team called “very athletic and big” by Gallagher and thrilled the hometown crowd with a 59 to 37 win. “I thought we played really good against

Mangum,” he said. “We rebounded really well and got some balance in the scoring again.” Gallagher said the Blue Devil defense did as good a job as a team can do. “You can’t keep a team scoreless,” he said, “but you can make them work for every point.”

Lady Blue Devils Are Tri-County Consolation Champs

“It was a good week,” said Cordell Head Coach Jana Rogers of her team’s Consolation Championship at the Tri-County Tournament.

Rogers made the statement in spite of a 40 to 46 first round loss to Hobart.

“They (Hobart) beat us in the first game of the season and we were looking forward to seeing them again,” she said. “We had the game tied with 2.5 minutes left, but a couple of mental breakdowns and a missed play cost us the win.”

Rogers said the Lady Blue Devils rebounded pretty well and had a balanced scoring effort.

The score was knotted at 11 at the end of the first period, with Cordell trailing 19 to 23 at halftime. Cordell outscored Hobart 11 to 7 in the third period to tie the score at 30 going into the final period.

Blue Devils Take Third Place At Tri-County Tournament

It took four overtimes in three games, but the Cordell Blue Devils put together a great game plan to take third place in the annual Tri-County Tournament.

“I thought we played better in all three games of the tournament,” said Cordell Head Coach Brandon Gallagher. “We still had some mistakes that cost us at times, but we did some really good things.”

When asked what those “good things” were, Gallagher said, “We had more balanced scoring, with some other guys getting involved with putting points on the board. We also rebounded really well, which has a positive impact on all parts of the game. We also didn’t have as many turnovers. All those are things we can control.”

The Blue Devils opened play against Mangum and advanced in the winner’s bracket with a 65 to 57 win.
