Cordell Memorial Hospital Looks To Sales Tax To Modernize, Expand

Cordell’s hospital wants to upgrade and expand services for Washita County’s citizens.

In anticipation of the summer 2019 Washita County sales tax vote, Cordell Memorial Hospital CEO Landon Hise has revealed a five-year plan to renovate and redesign hospital facilities and to add much-needed equipment.

CHS Promenade Will Be Friday, April 20

The annual Cordell High School Promenade will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018, just prior to the Prom.

Prom 2018 will be held at the Washita County Activity Center. Due to the potential for rain, Promenade will be held inside the Activity Center.

Cars will be allowed to pull in to the far back portion of the building to drop off those attending the prom and valets will be available to park the student vehicles.

Races Develop For County Assessor, County Commissioner #3

Three Washita County residents, two Republicans and one Democrat, have filed for the position of Washita County Commissioner for District 3.

Longtime commissioner Raydell Schneberger had announced he was retiring, leaving the seat open for the first time in many years.

Floyd King and Steve Tompkins, both Republicans filed for the seat, as did Phil Delp, a Democrat.

Dill City Fire Destroys Six Houses

Single-digit humidity, winds gusting to 45 miles per hour, and dangerous drought conditions combined on Thursday, April 12, 2018, to fuel a fire in Dill City that destroyed six houses.

According to Burns Flat Fire Chief John Wilson, only one of the houses was occupied at the time of the fire, which broke out between 3 and 4 p.m.

“The fire had apparently been smoldering in cotton burrs for sometime,” Wilson said. ‘Between when one of our firemen was called and we could respond, flames were everywhere.”

This spring, Oklahoma Blood Institute needs strong, bold, and fearless donors to give blood and help patients in area hospitals.

Colony Hosts American Indian Studies Professor

On Friday, March 30, 2018, Dr. Eric Tippiconnic, a nationally recognized scholar and artist, presented a lecture at the Colony Community Center.

Dr. Tippiconnic is an American Indian Studies professor at California State University in San Marcos and Northridge, California, and a full time History professor at California State University in Fullerton, California.

Classmates Establish Scholarship Fund

A scholarship fund in memory of Bubba Baldwin has been established by the Class of 1980.

This is a one-time scholarship to be awarded to a 2018 Cordell High School graduating senior.

Cordell Students Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope

The Backpack For Kids program received a huge boost by some young people whose love of livestock went beyond the show ring.

During the 2018 Oklahoma Youth Expo, 4-H and FFA members exhibiting livestock from all over the state donated pigs, steers, sheep and goats to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma for Beef for Backpacks and Pork for Packs.

Council Discusses Proposed Employee Expense For 2018-2019 Budget

According to Cordell Mayor Bob Plummer, nearly twothirds of the City’s budget is used for personnel and the council is wise to be looking closely at those costs well in advance of the budget deadlines.

With a total 2017-2018 budget in the vicinity of $3 million, the budgeted personnel budget was $1,697,390.19.
