Commissioners Reconsider Vacating County Road

Following receipt of a letter from concerned landowners, Washita County Commissioners voted to not sign Resolution No. 2018-17 which would have vacated County Road N2272, located in Section 30, Township 9 North, Range 16 West.

The decision means the road will remain open for public use.

Bessie Woman Injured In Accident

Leslie Doshier, 38, of Bessie, was critically injured in an accident which occurred about half a mile north of Bessie on U.S. Highway 183 on Saturday, March 24, just after 4 a.m.

Doshier, who was awaiting trial on two charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and felony kidnapping, was transported by Air Evac to OU Medical where she was listed in critical condition with injuries to her head and extremities.

Only hours before the accident her lawyers had succeeded in getting an extension and the trial had been rescheduled.

Price Receives OBU Academic Scholarships

Berkley Price, Cordell High School senior, was recently awarded an academic scholarship by Oklahoma Baptist University for the 2018-19 academic year.

Price received the Trustee’s Academic Scholarship. Presented in recognition of academic achievement, the Trustees’ Academic Scholarship is an annual $10,000 scholarship which can be renewed for three additional years, making the honor worth a potential of $40,000.

A senior at Cordell High School, Price is a member of the basketball team and student council. She is also involved in track and cross country. She currently plans to pursue a college degree in nursing.

Walk Dont Walk

Teachers across Oklahoma, including in Cordell, are weighing their options as a self-imposed deadline to walk out of classrooms looms.

As of press time on Tuesday, Oklahoma legislators had still not passed a bill funding pay raises for teachers, support staff, state employees and additional funding for education., although a plan had been passed by the house and was on the way to the Senate for possible approval.

Time was running out for a solution before the April 2 deadline set by the Oklahoma Education Association.

Cordell Council Declines To Hold Executive Session Regarding Police Department

After holding a ten minute recess to allow an officer to take call for Cordell Police Chief Brandon Rogers so he could be in attendance during an Executive Session, four of the seven council members in attendance at Monday night’s meeting did not vote for a motion to hold the Executive Session.

Members of the Cordell Police Department were in attendance at the meeting since they were listed as part of the Executive Session on the agenda for the March 19, 2018, meeting.

Chief Rogers was called out of the meeting just minutes before that agenda item was reached.

Brewer Wins Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award At SWOSU

Landry Brewer, history instructor on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) campus in Sayre, is the winner of the Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award for 2018 at SWOSU.

Brewer was presented the prestigious award at the annual Bernhardt banquet held on the Weatherford campus. For winning the award, Brewer received a $5,000 cash award, clock, pen and medallion.

SWOSU alumni Dr. William and Theta Juan Bernhardt of Midwest City are sponsors of the annual award that goes to an outstanding faculty member who exhibits exceptional achievement in teaching, scholarship and service.

National Wheat Growers Name Musick To Top Post

Sentinel resident Jimmie Musick, owner and operator of Musick Farms and Cattle Company, was recently named president of the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG).

Musick was previously the organization’s vice president and also served as past chairman of the Oklahoma Young Farmers Education Association and the National Young Farmers Education Association.

Other posts held by Musick include president of the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association and chairman of the Washita County Excise Board.

CKenergy Announces Youth Tour Winners

Hard work has paid off for four high school juniors as they make plans to tour the nation’s capital this summer. Maggie Green and Autumn Foster of Weatherford High School, Randi Lee Troglin of Mountain View-Gotebo High School and Jantzen Griswold of Southwest Covenant High School took top honors in the CKenergy Electric Cooperative Youth Tour Contest. Each of the winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. and a $500 scholarship
