Burns Flat Post Office Honors Richardson For 50 Years Of Service

On December 12, 2017, an award was presented to Johnny Richardson of Canute for 50 years of Service as the Foss Highway Contract Route Driver by Burns Flat Postmaster Eva Boyd. A group met at Western Sizzlin in Elk City to show their appreciation for his 50 years of service and honor him for continuing to work.

Richardson began his carrier route April 19, 1967, at the Foss Post Office. He has worked with several Postmasters and Officers In Charge (OIC), including Laura McNatt, Rea Regan, Judy Goringer, Vicki French, Sherry Hall, Kathy Adcock and presently Eva Boyd.

Cordell Employee of the Month

Ryder Campbell is the City of Cordell Employee of the Month for February. He is a volunteer for the Cordell Fire Department and a volunteer EMR with the Cordell Ambulance Service. Ryder is a born and raised Cordell resident. Ryder’s family consists of wife Whitney, and children Braxton and Paisley.

They spend most of their free time participating in sports and going camping. When asked about his goals, Ryder’s response was, “I would like to see my family strive to be better than I am and accomplish more than I have. And, I would like to provide them with the comfortable home and life my family deserves.”

Cordell Chamber Hosts Annual Banquet

It is nearly Mardi Gras time and the Cordell Chamber of Commerce is celebrating early at their annual banquet, scheduled to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2018, in the Washita County Activity Center.

Mira Burrows, the 2018 Chamber president, will serve as the Master of Ceremony for the Mardi Gras-themed event.

Dinner will be provided by Corn Heritage Village and the Cordell High School Jazz Band will provide the entertainment.

Included in the award presentations at the banquet will be the Hall of Fame, Citizen of the Year, Community Service, Community Improvement, and Special Recognition.

Schneberger Remains County Commissioner Chairman

In their first meeting of 2018, Washita County Commissioners voted unanimously for Raydell Schneberger to remain chairman of the Board of Washita County Commissioners for 2018.

The motion was made by Leo Goeringer and seconded by Bart Gossen.

Also approved was the Right of Way Application for Recoil Oilfield Services beginning in Section 23, Township 10 North, Range 19 West and ending in Section 16, Township 10 North, Range 18 West.

OSU Extension Holds Lawn Care Workshop

OSU Extension will offer a free Lawn Care Workshop on Saturday, January 27, at 9:30 am at the Washita County Extension office.

Brad Babek, Agriculture Extension Educator, will present the program.

Topics to be covered will include: weed identification, pre-emergence and post-emergence weed control (including sandbur control), fertility requirements, and more.

Council Votes On Electric Rates

An increase in electricity rates was part of the voting agenda at the January 16, 2018, meeting of the Cordell Utilities Authority.

The higher rate was necessary to cover the rate increase charged by the City’s power provider, Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) and to even out spikes in the Power Cost Adjustment.

Masons Provide Funding To SWODA

The Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma has again partnered with the South Western Oklahoma Development Authority (SWODA) Area Agency on Aging (AAA), along with other Area Agencies on Aging across the state, to assist with funding direct services for people 55 years of age and older.

These funds will be used on a first come first serve basis until they are all utilized.

Washita County Game Warden Rescues Elk

Washita County-based Game Warden Josey Branch hadn’t been with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation long when he was required to solve an unusual problem.

On Thursday, January 11, 2018, Branch responded to a Kiowa County property after a report came in of a 5 x 5 bull elk with its antlers entangled in a cotton bale tarp, electric fence and barbed wire fence.
