Old Pipes Creating a New Problem for City

Replacing old, cast iron water lines is a very expensive undertaking, and the Cordell City Council received information on how to afford it at their meeting on Monday, November 19, 2018.

Rick Schlegel of Cardinal Engineering told the council Cordell is functioning with cast iron lines which, if in top condition, were too small to handle today’s water needs.

The lines are not, however, in top condition. As the City has worked to fix the breaks and leaks the last few weeks, which number as many as five or six a day during the summer, they have seen the corrosion in the lines.

In some cases, only about 20 to 30 percent of the pipe’s diameter was available for use. The rest was filled with corrosion.
