The state Board of Equalization met last week to certify revenue the Legislature can appropriate for the Fiscal Year 2019 budget.

The board estimates we will have a budget gap of about $167 million. This represents the difference between what was appropriated for Fiscal Year 2018 and what should be available for FY19. This is actually great news. Last fall, the gap was estimated at $800 million. Just two years ago, it was $1.3 billion. It’s shrinking by the day. By the time we reach a budget agreement for the coming fiscal year, the gap may be much lower.
