A Word From The Superintendent

With the beginning of the legislative session a little more than a week away, Oklahomans find themselves in need of solutions. Solutions often don’t come easy, and the issues we are currently facing are more challenging than ever.

With so many challenges that our state is facing, I’ll try to keep my thoughts on the issues that face public education. In my opinion, the overall funding of public education is insufficient. This lack of funding hits education in several different ways.

The insufficient funding of public education has the most devastating effect on the number of individuals going into the teaching profession as well as those staying in Oklahoma as teachers. This trend could be improved with a salary increase for teachers. Unfortunately, this trend will not be fixed immediately simply with an increase in teacher pay. It will take a few years for more college graduates to decide to seek a career in education, and it will take a couple of years before teachers stop leaving the state for higher paying jobs in neighboring states.
