I’m thankful for a New Year and the chance to clean up some state agency problems. As I write this, work is ongoing for a House Special Investigation Committee charged with looking into financial mismanagement at the State Department of Health that stretches back at least six years. After questioning three executive level employees and the department’s former chief operating officer, it appears the department shuffled federal funds into unauthorized accounts and lived beyond its financial means. Department leaders provided the state with paperwork each year making it look as if they had balanced budgets.

The accounting tricks finally caught up with the department. Several top executives have been removed from their posts. The agency, now under new leadership, has submitted a corrective action plan that will reorganize programs and staff, saving an estimated $32 million over the next two fiscal years. Interviews with other department leaders are still being pursued
