Jolando (Jo) Gayle (Deeds) Hill was born on June 28, 1936, in Rocky, Oklahoma, to David Bennett and Grace Opal (Galloway) Deeds, and passed away on September 11, 2017, in Weatherford, Oklahoma, at the age of 81. Graveside services are set for 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at Lone Star Cemetery in Rocky, with Buck Nicholson officiating and Steve Strickler also speaking. Services will be under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home. Jo grew up on her family’s farm outside of Rocky, where she enjoyed riding on the tractor with her father, climbing trees and watching the clouds float by. She was a talented singer and piano player and performed numerous recitals as a child. Jo was a proud Rocky Buffalo, graduating from Rocky High School in 1954, where she played basketball and was a cheerleader. The previous year, at the age of 16, she had married her high school sweetheart, Benny Joe Hill, on May 1, 1953. Following graduation, the young couple moved to Weatherford to attend what is now known as Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where they lived in Vetsville on campus. While taking classes as a music major, Jo worked at Ratcliffe’s Bookstore behind the lunch counter. When Benny graduated from SWOSU in 1957, Jo made a new home in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Sons Kevin, Kelly, and Kent were all born during her time there. After a stint back in Weatherford and a short time in Bryan, Texas, while Benny finished up his PhD at Texas A&M, the family moved back to Weatherford to stay in 1964. Daughter Kristi was born in Weatherford. Jo was part of the first group of women to volunteer as Pink Ladies at Weatherford Memorial Hospital and worked the inaugural shift. She also spent a few years as church secretary at the Weatherford Church of Christ before taking her post as departmental secretary in the Language Arts department at SWOSU in the winter of 1981. Students and faculty alike knew her office was the place to go if you were homesick, needed first aid, needed candy, needed information about anything and everything on campus, or just needed to sit and talk. She loved talking to new students, faculty and staff every year. She also organized and hosted countless parties and graduation gatherings for the Physics department, where Benny served as chair. After 35 years, Jo retired from SWOSU in 2016. Jo was a faithful fan of the Weatherford Eagles and Southwestern Bulldogs. She loved watching and listening to their sporting events, even traveling to watch the Lady Bulldog basketball team win several national titles. She is survived by children Kevin Hill and wife, Donna of Amarillo, Texas; Kelly Hill and wife, Tina of Yukon; Kent Hill and wife, Kristy of Murphy, Texas; daughter Kristi Hill of Weatherford; grandchildren Becca Sullivan and husband, Zach, Kylie Sanders and husband, Chad; Katelyn Hill; Abby Hill; Ben Hill; and great-grandchildren, Sydnee Sullivan, Max Sanders and Kira Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents, David Bennett and Grace Opal (Galloway) Deeds; husband, Benny in 2014; sister, Benna G. Martin and great-grandson Aiden Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the SWOSU Foundation.
