House Report

The Legislature approved a state budget this week to run the state for another year. The final amount knitted together is $6.9 billion. This allots the same funding levels as last year to 15 core government services. These include common education, healthcare, veterans and the military, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Mental Health, the Department of Corrections, Department of Transportation, Oklahoma Highway Patrol and others.

The remaining 50-plus appropriated state agencies will receive between four and eight percent cuts. While they are certainly important to those involved, they are not in the category of core services. I certainly don’t love everything in this budget. As a matter of fact, some parts of how we got to the dollar amount for the budget, I extremely dislike. I am not in favor of every funding measure that went into building this budget, and I voted no on most revenue increases that were proposed.
