City of Cordell honors longtime employee with street naming

In a heartwarming ceremony on Friday morning, August 23rd, Mike Weixel, a dedicated employee of the City of Cordell, was honored for his remarkable 43 years of service in the Streets Department. To commemorate his commitment to the city, the City of Cordell named a street in his honor— now officially called “Weixel Way.”

Mike, who began his career with the City of Cordell in 1981, has become a familiar face and a dependable figure in the community. Mike also served on the fire department for 23 years under Tommy Merrill, later becoming the acting Fire Chief, further demonstrating his dedicated service to the Cordell community. Over the years, he has been a mainstay in maintaining the city’s infrastructure, often going above and beyond expectations. His colleagues, community members, and the Mayor of Cordell gathered to celebrate this special recognition and express their gratitude for his dedication.

During the surprise presentation, a fellow employee, Dustin Pool, spoke highly of Mike’s work ethic and commitment. “Mike is always ready to take that middle-of-the-night call and take care of our people. I couldn’t ask for a better person to work with,” Dustin remarked, highlighting Mike’s reliability and dedication throughout his career.

In his response, Mike humbly reflected on his time with the city. “I’ve seen this city go through some really bad times and some really good times, but the team I work with has always been great,” he shared. “I appreciate all this, but it’s not about me; it’s all about teamwork.” His words captured the spirit of teamwork and unity that has defined his many years of service.

“First, I would like to thank my wife, Emily, for standing by my side for 32 years. It was quite a shock, a humbling experience, and an honor to serve my community. I work for a good mayor, Mayor Phil, and City Administrator Vicky make my job easier. I’ve worked with a lot of guys over the years that made my job easier, and I still consider them good friends and family. I consider all city employees as family and thank them for their service. Dustin Pool went to Mayor Phil and got the ball rolling with the help of fellow employees. I knew nothing about it and was shocked when I pulled up. I honestly thought it was an accident at first, and they told me to look at the sign. I feel there are others who have worked here in the past who are more deserving of the honor. I started when I was 19; Joe Elliott was the Street Commissioner, and Tom Crider was the Mayor. I also served over 20 years on the fire dept and seven years in the ambulance service while the hospital had the ambulance. Everyone has a purpose in life, and mine is serving others. I would like to thank the employees, Mayor Phil, City Administrator, and The City Council for this honor,” stated Mike.

Mike also clarified that he is not yet ready to retire, much to the delight of his colleagues and the community. His wife, Emily, was present at the ceremony, sharing the joy and pride of this momentous occasion.

“He was totally surprised and humbled by this. He is not one to like the attention on him. We have been together for 32 years, and he is one of the most dedicated people you will find. You will find him out in the middle of a storm, no matter what time it is. He takes pride in his job,” expressed Emily. The newly named “Weixel Way” will serve as a lasting homage to Mike’s contributions to Cordell, reminding everyone of his commitment and positive impact on the community.

The ceremony was a tribute to the deep connections within the City of Cordell and a celebration of a man who has devoted many years to serving his community. Congratulations to Mike on this well-earned recognition!
