Cordell eighth-grader Jaxon Jones has punched his ticket to the State Powerlifting Meet after a strong showing at regionals. Competing in the 132-pound division, Jones will represent Cordell this Thursday, March 13, in El Reno.
Cordell’s powerlifting program has been revived this year after a long absence, making Jones’ qualification an exciting milestone for the school. His coach, Bruce Munden, expressed his pride in all the athletes who competed, highlighting the hard work and growth seen throughout the season.
“I want to start by saying that I am proud of everyone that worked this year and allowed us to even do this. The two young men that I took to regionals this year both competed and beat their own records. While one did not make it, they only missed qualifying for state by a few pounds,” Munden said. “Jaxon is a testament to his work ethic. He has competed in a total of four sports this year already, with track fast approaching. That commitment is everything we strive for in Cordell athletics and everything we want to see as coaches. I am proud of all those [who] competed this year, and I think there is a foundation that has been laid for the future.”
With Cordell powerlifting on the rise, Jones will look to make an impact at the state level. Best of luck at state!
