Basketball has been in full swing for your Cordell Lady Blue and Blue Devils. The first game of the year, both teams traveled over to Minco. It was a rocky start for both squads as the girls fell 5110. Leading the way for the Lady Blue Devils was Freshman Birdie Brown. She had 6 points. Sophomore Payton Garrison had 2 and Freshman Brenyn Ball had 2 as well. On the boys side, the Devils fell 94-33. Leading in the scoring effort was Senior JD Maddox. He had 14 points and 4 rebounds. Senior Thomas Reimer put up 6 and had 2 rebounds. Sophomore Border Dodd had 5. Junior Jordan Wood had 3 points and 7 rebounds and Sophomore Dason Ramsey had 3 points and 3 rebounds.
The home opener for the 2022-2023 season brought the Bearcats from Hobart to town. The girls were able to put up a few more points, but the Lady Bearcats took control from the opening tip. They fell 63-23. Leading the scoring for your Lady Blue Devils was Sophomore McKinsey Gray. She had 11 points, followed by Sophomore Peyton with 7 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman Brenyn Ball had 3 and 3 rebounds, and Freshman Birdie Brown had 2 points and 3 rebounds. The Blue Devils then took the court and also fell 73-45. Leading scorer was JD Maddox with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Followed by Sophomore Harlee Taylor with 9, Junior Jordan Wood with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Senior Aiden Middendorf got in on the scoring with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist. Senior Thomas Reimer scored 5 points, had 5 rebounds and 2 assists. And Junior Scout Reiger got his name in the books with 3 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist.
The 3rd game of the season had the teams traveling to Hinton to take on the Comets. The girls played a close first quarter, came out flat in the 2nd, but after halftime came out and won the next 2 quarters. The Lady Blue fell 41-26. Leading in scoring for the girls was Birdie Brown. She had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomores McKinsey Gray had 7 points and 3 rebounds and Payton Garrison had 5 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman Rylee Chagollia had 3. The boys had rough go again and lost 63-35. Leading the Blue Devil charge was JD Maddox with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Harlee Taylor had 8 points and 2 rebounds. Thomas Reimer had 5 points and 6 rebounds and Jordan Wood and Aiden Middendorf had 2 apiece.
The season has started rough for both teams, but they continue to come out and fight each night and try to give themselves a chance. The girls are young, but they are gaining valuable game experience. The boys are learning to play together and learning a different style of ball. They are all working hard in practice and putting in the time. They are getting better each and every day.
