Blue Devils sports: The week in review (March 3)

Wrestling

Junior Shane Perkins represented Cordell at the Class 3A 100th State Wrestling Championships Saturday at the State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City.
Perkins faced Joe Jackson from Watonga in a single-elimination pigtail match and came up short 5-3.

“I was really proud of the way Shane wrestled,” Coach Dillon Ball said. “He has been battling a knee injury and got in deep on a couple of shots that would have given him control of the match, but just couldn't quite finish them. He wrestled his tail off in the regional tournament in the toughest weight class there by far to qualify for state. I am really looking forward to his senior year, he has the ability and toughness to accomplish some great things.”

Girls basketball

The Lady Blue Devils battled hard last week in playoffs, winning the district championship, and advancing to the 2nd round in the regional competition. The girls finished the season with a final record of 10-12. Head coach Jana Rogers is proud of the girls’ performance this season and said they did all a coach could ask for.

“They really improved throughout the season and were playing their best ball at the end,” Rogers said.
Rogers was also impressed with the attitude and conduct of this year’s seniors.

“The four seniors, Andrea Palmer, Evan Anderson, McKenzy Isbell, and Lacey Burch, were all great teammates and they handled their roles on the team with pride. I’m very thankful I got to coach them all,” Rogers said.

Boys Basketball

The Blue Devil boys basketball team advanced to the third round in the regional playoffs last week and played with a ferocity that left head coach Brandon Gallagher satisfied with the season.

“I was very proud of how this team battled and competed all year,” Gallagher said.

Gallagher was pleased with his team’s attitude throughout the season, and how the players triumphed in the face of adversity.

Gallagher said the team has had some “very special moments” this season, and especially last week.

“I thought we had a lot of kids step up during the week. All our guys hit big shots at some time, and we had lots of great defensive stops at the end of the games. The Blue Devils had great all-around team effort,” said Gallagher

According to their coach, the team's starters, Brady Reimer, Bode Gallagher, Blaine Larsen, Kray Rogers, and Dawson Willard, along with Cade Walker, JD Maddox, and Danny Corbin, all had big moments during the games this week.

This year's seniors, Bode Gallagher, Raydon Kuehne, and Brady Reimer, played hard all season according to their coach. Gallagher and the team say they will cherish the times they had this season with seniors and appreciated and the great leadership they provided.

“Bode and Brady really stepped up their games this year and made some really big plays. I hated that Raydon couldn't ever get over his football injury. I know he tried his hardest, and we really missed him. Through it all, he was a great teammate to all of our guys. Those boys meant a lot to our program, I'm gonna miss them,” said Gallagher.
