Blue Devils sports: The week in review

BASEBALL

The Cordell boys baseball team played three games last week, picking up their first loss of the season against Snyder. Despite the loss, the Devils came out of the Shortgrass Conference Tournament as consolation champions. The boys’ stand 6-1 as of press time and continue to top the Class 2A-District 1 week 3 rankings as of March 3, coming in ahead of No. 2 Cashion.

Thurs, March 25 Snyder 12, Cordell 4

The Cordell Blue Devils went up against the Snyder Cyclones in their first game of the Shortgrass Conference tournament. Two cancellations earlier in the week left the boys a bit rusty, leading them to their first loss of the season.

In this game, the Devils struggled to throw strikes, while errors made room for unearned runs. 14 cy clone runners were left on base. The Devils only managed five hits to the Cyclones’ 12. In terms of earned runs, Cordell’s four trumped Snyders’ 2.

Head baseball coach Bobby Blackburn commended the Devils on overcoming adversity in the first four innings and playing well in the final two.

At the plate Dawson Willard, Dane Corbin, and Brady Reimer all had one RBI.

Fri, March 26, Cordell 8, Burns-flat-Dill City 5

Anxious to hop back on their winning streak, the Cordell Blue Devils defeated the BFDC Eagles.

Willard served as the winning pitcher of this game, throwing ten strikes with only one error and one walk. Raydon Kuehne had a remarkable save. Reimer and Parker Johnson worked hard in the outfield, with two putouts each.

At the plate, Kuehne came in clutch with three RBI, followed by Willard with two, and Kameron Rivera with one.

Sat, March 27 Cordell 8, Hobart 6

The Cordell boys wrapped up the week with one last win, coming home as consolation champs.

In this battle, winning pitcher Adden Zanghi threw 13 strikes, with only four walks and six hits. Kuehne came in relief to get the save, while Willard did a super job at first base on some tough plays. At the plate, Ryan Neeley, Kuehne, and Johnson all had two runs batted in.

GIRL'S SOCCER

The Cordell Lady Blue Devil soccer team competed in the Weatherford soccer tournament, bringing their season record to 2-4. In the tournament, the girls were consolation champions.

Fri, March 26 Weatherford 6, Cordell 1 In their first game of the tournament, the Lady Blue fell to the Weatherford Lady Eagles. Erin Dudgeon scored the team's one goal, while Goalie Andrea Palmer captured 11 saves.

Fri, March 26, Christian Heritage 6, Cordell 0

Despite a valiant effort, the Cordell girls were unable to score a point in Friday night’s second fight. As goalie, Palmer saved 16 enemy shots from entering the goal.

Sat, March 27 Cordell 4, Kingfisher 0

The Cordell girls picked up their second win of the season in their final game of the tournament, walking away as Consolation Champions. Dudgeon scored all four of the team's points, while Palmer prevented 11 enemy shots from getting on the board. Tristen Reimer was penalized late in the game with a yellow card for aggressive behavior.

BOY'S SOCCER

Competing in the Weatherford Soccer tournament last week, the Cordell Blue Devil Soccer team was unable to bring home a single win. As of press time their season record rests at 0-6.

In their first game of the week, Goalie Aiden Middendorf had four saves.

Friday night’s second game was hard fought, unfortunately ending in a loss. Goalie Spencer Williams caught two enemy shots during this battle.

Sat, March 27 Cordell 12, Kingfisher 2

In the last game of the tournament, Cameron Cochran and Tugger Selman each scored one goal, while Williams had seven saves.
