Blue Devils, Lady Devils Fall To Minco

Last Tuesday Cordell played host to the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs of Minco.

Kamdyn Davis opened things up for the Lady Devils with a quick three-pointer, followed by two from Renee Javorsky to give Cordell an early 5-0 lead. Minco battled back and brought the game to a 10-10 tie after one. The Lady Devils managed only four points in the second, but their impressive defense held Minco scoreless in the period and the girls took a 14-10 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Bulldogs came roaring back in the third quarter, scoring the first four points of the period to tie the game before Davis drained another three to propel Cordell back atop the scoreboard. Minco held tight, though, and put the game away in the fourth period, walking away with a 34-30 win.

“We led most of the game but are still learning how to win those close ones,” said head coach Jana Rogers. “But, we looked so much better than we did our first game, we have pretty balanced scoring and we played much better defense and rebounded the ball much better.”

Kamdyn Davis led the Lady Devils with nine points. Bailey Troub and Andrea Palmer each added six, and Renee Javorsky scored five.

Following the girls game, Cordell’s boys took to the court. Gaige Keister opened the scoring with a long three, but Minco responded with two long shots of their own to claim a 6-3 lead. The teams fought an even first quarter battle, with Minco coming out with a 19-18 lead. After the first quarter, however, the Bulldogs began to exert their dominance. They opened up a 36-28 lead going into halftime, then extended it by another seven in the third period and added nine more in the fourth on their way to a 77-53 win.

“I think that Minco is one of the top teams in the state,” said head coach Brandon Gallagher. “I have them ranked number one. I was proud of our intensity and how we competed. They were just a little too much for us right now. We got in some early foul trouble and that got us out of some things we were doing well. It was a great learning experience for us.”

Keister led Cordell in scoring, with 16 points. He also added five rebounds, one assist, and one deflection. Raydon Kuehne chipped in 14 points, along with a rebound, an assist, and a steal. Brady Reimer rounded out the double digit scorers with 13, along with two boards and three assists.
