Blue Devils continue to improve and show great teamwork

The Cordell Blue Devils made the longest road trip of the year so far to Empire City last Friday night to open district play with the Bulldogs. The final score didn’t reflect the outcome that we were looking for, but they continue to get better and better each week.

Talking to Coach Cody Gilmore Monday morning he said, “There were things that happened that were out of the team’s hands Friday night, but we continued to show that never lay down, never quit fighting attitude that this team is continuing to show week in and week out.”

The Blue Devil defense held the stout Empire rushing attack to 106 yards rushing. A few, very lucky breaks for the Bulldogs resulted in touchdowns. The defense played one of the better games of the season. Newcomer Harlee Taylor, who was seeing some of his first action of the season and his young football career, intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. The Devils forced several punts and Freshman Joe Wilson stepped up and made several tackles and had several tackles for losses. The Devils offense was able to get some yards throughout the game but was never able to put points on the board until the fourth quarter.

Starting quarterback Danny Corbin went down midway through the second quarter with an ankle injury. Senior JD Maddox came in and led the offense until he was knocked out of the game during third quarter. Junior Gage Miller then came in for the Devils at quarterback and Sophomore Dayton Bartlett capped off a punishing drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Miller then scored the two-point conversion.

This week the Blue Devils play host to the visiting Carnegie Wildcats. This week also marks HOMECOMING!

In continuing conversation with Coach Gilmore, he said, “I am looking forward to being a part of homecoming in Cordell. I have heard stories about the level of excitement and support that the town shows! We have had a great week so far with all the float decorating and the festivities and dress up days at school. We are looking forward to playing in front of a loud, rowdy crowd Friday night!”

The homecoming parade and pep rally at the courthouse will take place Friday at 1:00! Come out and see all the hard work the classes have put into the floats and come get pumped up for the game Friday night! Kick off is at 7:00! B.I.T.S GO BIG BLUE!
