Doris Louise Horn

Feb. 8, 1928 April 20, 2024

Doris Horn, 96, died on April 20, 2024 in Wichita, Kansas.

Born Doris Louise Friesen on February 8, 1928, to John R. and Wanda Friesen in Tiefengrund, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Doris grew up as one of 13 siblings, the oldest girl. As such, she took on caretaking responsibilities at an early age, learning lessons that would serve her through a lifetime of taking loving care of family and others.

Doris pursued her education diligently, graduating from high school at Rosthern Junior College with the class of 1947.

She then went on to teach in a one-room schoolhouse before marrying Theodor (Ted) Horn on August 8, 1950.

Doris moved with Ted to Corn, Oklahoma shortly after, and lived there for most of the rest of her life.

Doris loved to cook, and excelled at that. She loved to collect recipes and always responded with pies for church funerals.

Doris also loved flowers. Even in her last years, a fresh bouquet always made her smile and exclaim how beautiful it was.

For many years, she had a large garden, freezing and canning lots of produce that was enjoyed for the rest of the year. Her dill pickles were a standout.

She assisted Ted as the bookkeeper for the farming operation, as well as being a sounding board and sometimes opinion-giver.

For the last nine years of Ted’s life, she also became the de facto decision maker and caregiver, allowing him to live his last days as he wanted after he suffered a stroke.

Her faithfulness in the easy and hard times was always evident and an example for her family. She could always find something to be grateful for and was ever hopeful for a good outcome.

She was involved in numerous activities at the Herold Mennonite church, for many years singing in a trio with Donna Nickel and Rosella Horn, ably accompanied by Elvera Schmidt.

She supported her daughters’ activities in school and church, offering support and encouragement when needed.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Theodor Horn and 12 siblings.

She is survived by her daughters Carol (John) Furrow and Victoria (Mike) Hinz, five grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold Friesen and wife Helen, sister- in-law Goldie Friesen, brother-in-law Norman Ediger, and many cousins, both by birth and by marriage.

Doris will be greatly missed by those who knew her. The next time you have a slice of homemade bread, or drink a cup of coffee at 9 PM, think of Doris.

A graveside service will be held on July 6, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the Herold Mennonite Church.
